Q&A with Callaghan

What was the first concert you attended?   It was John Denver, when I was 5.  My parents took me and at the time I had listened to so much of his music I knew every word to every song!  Unfortunately though since I was so young and the concert was late at night apparently I fell asleep a few songs in.

Which of your songs is your favorite and why?  It's hard to pick a favorite since they all have so many different meanings.  "Noah's Song" is written about my 4-year-old nephew who lives back in the UK, so that song definitely means a lot to me.  "When You Loved Me" is another favorite because it was inspired by an old friend in her 80's who told me a story about the first man she'd fallen in love with.  That song always gets a lot of strong reaction when I play it live at my shows and I love the memories it stirs up that people often share with me after the show.

If you could open for any artist in the next year, who would it be?   Elton John! I'm such a fan of his and have been listening to his music for as long as I can remember - I even taught myself to play piano from his songbooks.  When I lived in Atalanta I always hoped that maybe I'd be lucky enough to bump into him since he has a house there, but sadly it didn't happen!

What three artist's have you listened to obsessively in the last months?   I am a really big fan of Coldplay, and particularly their newest album Ghost Stories which I've listened to a lot.  It is so relaxing and the music can transport me to another place.  It has been really good to listen to on long car journey's on my recent tour since it's so relaxing.  The other two albums I've been playing a lot recently are Sarah McLachlan's album "Laws of Illusion" and Jack Johnson "From Here To Now To You".  I definitely go through phases when listening to albums where I listen non-stop for awhile then move on to something new.  I'm sure the next few will all be loud rock albums or something uptempo since all those three are so chilled out!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?   A singer.  There was absolutely nothing else I ever wanted to do.  Even before I knew I could write songs I always knew I wanted to be a performer.  I love the physical feeling of singing and the buzz that live performance gives me.  I can't imagine ever doing anything else!

Cat person, dog person, or both?   If I have to choose one, it would be dog although I don't have one because of all the touring I do.  My actual favorite pet would be a rabbit though!  I owned a house rabbit when I was growing up that used to run around the house and was so tame.  I even taught it to do tricks and come when I called its name.  Rabbits are more intelligent than people think! :-)

Books or movies?   There's nothing like being totally absorbed in a great book and not being able to put it down.  A good book will always win over a movie for me, but sometimes it's hard to find the time to get into a book so a movie can be instantly absorbing especially hen you're tire and want to chill out for a few hours.

What would most people be surprised to learn about you?  I am a great baker! I really enjoy baking bread from scratch and some tasty British treats like Victoria Sandwich Cake, Rhubarb Crumble with hot custard, and crumpets!
