Besides Daniel is a young band from Atlanta performing at Jammin Java Tuesday June 3 with Aaron and The Spell and JD Eicher. Check out the brief Q&A below AND a video of "Untouched And Burning" - a song recently featured on NPR's All Songs Considered.
Where and when was your first show?
A county court house in Douglasville Georgia. Not sure why I played there or what the event was for but it was one of the most awkward experiences of my life. I performed in the gigantic open lobby with my rock band and it sounded like a 2 weed-eaters fighting in an empty gymnasium. I was 16.
What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?
I'd say the French tattoo artist Xoil. I've yet to get a tattoo but his work is inspiring me right now.
What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?
I once had a few days off and was passing through Eastern Washington on a bicycle. I had decided to tour on a bike for the summer last year. I met a family in Clarkston Washington (named for William Clark of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition) named Ronny and Wendy. They picked me up as they passed by and saw me in the rain. They offered a place for me to crash for a few days on their sail boat and we went out sailing in the evenings. I played tunes for them and some friends on the boat out on the snake River. We all had a blast together. The water was really cold but swimming in the river was fun too. I ended up busking at the marina to make enough skirl to continue biking on to Portland Oregon. There I met Fred Armisen on the street corner, celebrated the 4th of July with a dozen amazingly friendly strangers, and busked at the Portland SaturdayMarket which is the largest continuously operated outdoor market in the United States. The northwest is magical. That was a good week.
A fresh fruit smoothie that includes but is not restricted to chopped ginger root, grapefruit juice, soft bananas, pineapple, strawberries, ice-cream, and a few secret things I'll never tell.
Favorite Drink: Same as above.
If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself?
Marlon Brando, early 50s version, he's the best.
What two words would best describe your music?
