Artist Q&A

@JamminJavaMei's Q&A With Chad Sugg

Chad Sugg is an up and coming singer/songwriter from Tennessee with a substantial online following. He's performed with some of our favorites including Against The Current, Alex Goot, and others. He's here July 8!

Where and when was your first show?

My first show EVER was actually when my friends and I played our high school talent show, but I won't bore you with that.... My first real show was for my other musical project Backseat Goodbye, back in 2004. I played solo at a Borders in our local mall in Clarksville, TN, and I don't know much, but looking at how in-experienced I was back then, it probably wasn't anything to write glowingly about. Flash-forward to 2013, and that's where you'll find the first time I played a show under my own name. It was a college show opening for my friend Alex Goot. We played in this odd cafeteria room, but the crowd was great, and I had about 8 years of touring under my belt, so it was a bit better than the days of talent shows and Borders.

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?

I'd have to say either John Mayer or Conor Oberst. They both encompass what I think are the better sides of both the major label and independent sides of the music industry. And musically, a mix of Mayer's more accessible vocal style with Oberst's lyrical focus is exactly what I like to go for with my own style.

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?

This will sound completely made up, but it's actually quite true: Years ago, before anyone knew who I was at all, I drove 14 hours straight to start my first "real" tour with other bands.... I arrived in PA, played a show to no one, then my car at the time broke down outside the venue. I actually ended up sleeping in a fire-station that night on a couch, and the next morning some stranger who had passed me the day before and saw my troubles went with me to buy a new battery for the car. Oh, and the rest of the bands I was touring with left me to continue the tour in NYC and opened for The Offspring at CBGB's the next day. I was young and it scared the daylights out of me, so I drove 14 hours straight back home and jumped back on the tour a few days later.

Favorite Food: Cheeseburgers, always cheeseburgers.

Favorite Drink: Jack & Coke, simple as that.

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself?

I think I'd have to go with Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy portraying me. That just sounds like an all-around damn good time to me.

Cat-Person, Dog-Person, or both?

Cat person, despite the fact that dogs are cool in my book, too. I have a cat named Albus (yes, after Dumbledore from Harry Potter), and he's a Maine-Coon. He's huge, and is totally weird... It's amazing.

What two words would best describe your music?

Turnt Up. Not really though, maybe a better pairing would be, "Anti-Turnt Up".
