Artist Q&A

@JamminJavaMei's Q&A With Mary Fahl

Mary Fahl has one of the most amazing voices! She was lead singer of folk/rock band, October Project, and is here Saturday night for a solo show. It's always a treat to hear a world-class voice like Mary's in an intimate setting like Jammin Java. Tickets are available here. Mei caught up with Mary for this brief Q&A. Enjoy!

Where and when was your first show?

I was 15 years old... my brother-in-law was dabbling at music management and booked me for a show at Scarsdale High School as "Mary Christine"... I made $75... It was thrilling...

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?

That's almost impossible to answer... my influences are such a mish-mosh of different genres...

I certainly loved British Folk and Pink Floyd - but honestly - as a teenager in the '70s, I loved Joni Mitchell, July Collins and Carly Simon... Especially Carly Simon - I loved that deep, open-throated sound of hers... She sang like a woman, not a girl...

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?

Well, I wasn't exactly on-tour, but I was with my husband in China... He was speaking at a university there (he's a deep-sea oceanographer).  The head of the university's English Dept. ended up being a huge October Project fan and in 3 days, he arranged for me to do a concert for the whole student body... It was surreal!

Favorite Food:  Steak au poivre

Favorite Drink: A good red wine...

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to  portray yourself? Tom Cruise

What two words would best describe your music? Cinematic... haunting
