Where and when was your first show? Our upcoming show on April 18 at Jammin Java is actually going to be our first official show as Savage Bones! My personal first show was at a high school battle of the bands long enough ago that I’m afraid to count backwards from today. As I recall, we played terrible covers by terrible bands and I might have even been wearing a visor because I thought it was cool. Teenagers. What can you say.
What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence? One of the things that makes Savage Bones work is that while we individually have an eclectic range of influences, I think we’ve found a way to successfully channel and focus those influences into a sound that’s cohesive and honest. We see ourselves as unequal parts alt-country, Americana, indie, and pop. As a songwriter, my biggest personal influence is Ryan Adams. I’ve always loved the gritty and subtle imagery he uses to tell his stories. I’ve studied every one of his records inside and out for years and while I might never be half the songwriter he is, it sure is fun as hell to try.
What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences? After playing all over the world, one of my weirdest tour stories actually takes place right here at home at Jammin Java. Years ago while Dan (drummer in Savage Bones, bass player in Bigger Lights) and I were still in Bigger Lights, we actually played a show at Jammin Java where at some point during our set, one of our fans broke into our van and started hanging out in the backseat. It was so dark while we were loading out that we didn’t even notice her there until she said hey from the backseat. We tried to kindly ask her to leave the band but when she refused, we actually had to have venue personnel help us forcibly remove her so that we could leave for the next show.
