The big Band Battle Finals show is next Friday! The bi-annual Band Battles are a highlight of our calendar and the finals really showcase the best of the talent and variety of the acts involved. Check out these fun Q&As Mei did with the finalists!

DTMG

Where and when was your first show? We did not perform a single song in English at our first show. After the success of our Kpop remixes on YouTube we were invited to perform at the Korus Festival for about 3,000 people in September 2012.

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence? As far as songwriting influences, Sting nearly single-handedly pulled me (this is Dave) out of my world of instrumental jazz into a pursuit of vocal story telling. As far as the band’s influences, everyone in the band has a different background—for some it is rock in all its forms; others, gospel, R&B, and funk; me, I started in jazz so it is almost impossible for us to nail down a main influence.

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring/show experiences? On December 8, 2012, our band had the privilege of headlining the Apollo Music Café at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. We got to walk on the same stage as James Brown, The Jackson 5 and countless other legends. We even got to rub The Tree of Hope. The whole experience was a surreal blessing.

Favorite Food: I (Dave) prefer to eat vegetarian so when I bring food for the band our keyboardist Danny always shouts, “I don’t want your twigs and berries!” I like pineapple on my pizza while most everyone else in the band wants pepperoni and sausage—meat, meat, and more meat.

Favorite Drink: I am clearly speaking not only for myself (Dave again) but everyone in the band when I say the favorite drink is pomegranate juice. (Oops! Our bassist Teo wants you and the world to know that his favorite drink is Kool-Aid.) If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself? As for me (Dave again), the only actor who I think could possibly resemble me would be Arnold Schwarzenegger, circa 1984 when he filmed The Terminator. We are not talking facial resemblance here; it is more the body type. Paul, the guitarist, might actually be Flynn Rider from Disney’s Tangled. Does CG count? Teo says the band to portray us would be Bruno Mars. (Help me! Is Bruno Mars a band or a guy?) What two words would best describe your music? Neo-soul-ish rock.

BEGGARS MADE BELIEVERS

Where and when was your first show? The band first came together in March 2010 to play a weekend retreat at a church in Woodbridge, VA. The event was called Journey, and we didn't have a name yet, so folks simply called us "The Journey Band". People were upset when we didn't open with "Don't Stop Believin".

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence? The Wiggles

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences? We played a camp in North Bay, MD, and still have a wealth of inside jokes and memories from the experience. Some of them include kayaking around North Bay, attempting to eat oysters for the first time, and climbing a rock wall so we could pet a stuffed cheetah. Needless to say, "Pet the Cheetah!" has become a sort of battle cry for the band.

Favorite Food: Anything free (beggars can't be choosers)

Favorite Drink: Coffee or cream soda

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself? The cast of Star Wars: A New Hope

What two words would best describe your music? "Eclectic rabble"

THE CHRISTIAN LOPEZ BAND & JOE TAXI

Where and when was your first show? The Circle B Ranch in Hill City, South Dakota is a family ran cowboy ranch and at the end of the evening, after dinner, the family played an entire show of cowboy tunes with 3 two guitars, a mandolin, bass, and 4 amazing voices. Changed my life and made me pick up a guitar.

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence? The Avett brothers, hands down

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences? Tough question... Probably when we signed our first boobie in Glenville, WV.

Favorite Food: Good ole Chinese Cuisine Favorite Drink: Red Stripe , Red Bull

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself? Great Question! Christian (Vocals, Guitar) - James Dean Dom (bass) - Marlin Brando Chelsea (Banjo) - Lilian Roth Michael (Drums) - Duane Jones

What two words would best describe your music? Genuine & Jubilant
