Artist Q&A

@JamminJavaMei's Q&A With The Kennedys

The Kennedys have been playing JJ since the beginning. Although they're based in New York City now, they have roots in the DC area and their shows here are always a sort of homecoming. They're here on December 6 with The Nields for a "Dynamic Duos" show! Get tickets here.

Where and when was your first show?

Maura: The Maura Show, on the back porch of my house when I was five. I sang, and my brothers went around and collected a nickel from each listener

Pete: My first band put on shows in the drummer's family garage. We set up folding chairs in the driveway and played Rolling Stones covers. We weren't good enough to charge admission!

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?

Maura: Patsy Cline, Sandy Denny, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, The Kinks, Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Louvin Brothers, Ramones

Pete: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, George Gershwin, Jimi Hendrix

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?

Maura: Singing to a dozen buffalo on a farm in Kansas. They really seemed to get into it!

Pete: Playing the banjo at a fast food restaurant, wearing a dragon mascot costume. It was really tough to fingerpick with those massive claws.

Favorite food:

Maura: My own homemade pasta!

Pete: Maura's homemade pasta.

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself?

Maura: Zoe Deschanel

Pete: Jeff Bridges

What two words would best describe your music?
