Jesse Ruben is here this Saturday opening both Brendan James shows. Mei caught up with him for this brief interview!
Where was the first show you performed at? It was a bar in Cambridge, MA. I don’t even remember the name of it. Every Berklee student played there, it was like a rite of passage. Everything went wrong. I broke a string, forgot my lyrics, and during the last song, the microphone stand was too loose and the mic slowly slid down until it fit the floor.
What artist/ band would you say you are most influenced by? jackson browne, ben folds, matt nathanson. guys that do what i do, but better.
What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences? One time i left my computer bag on an amtrak train. it had my laptop, merch money (basically an envelope full of cash) and a hard drive with my new album on it. Since train conductors aren’t allowed to use phones now, they told me there was nothing they could do. Luckily, someone standing close by had a friend on the train, who found my bag, gave it to the conductor, and they held it overnight. When I got on the train back to New York the next day, they had it waiting for me, with everything in it. I cashed in a lot of karma points that day.
Favorite food thai, vietnamese, japanese.
What two words would best describe your music? “jesse’s songs”
