Artist Q&A

@JamminJavaMei's Q&A With Mikey Wax

MikeyWax-2013

Mikey Wax is here tonight with Frankmusik and Zahra Universe! Get tickets here. Mei caught up with him for this cool Q&A.

Where and when was your first show?

My first show took place when I was a freshman in college at Vanderbilt University. I was pledging a fraternity, and at the time a little nervous performing for others. One of the fraternity brothers challenged me to the task of playing a show at the local Mellow Mushroom pizza joint in front of all the fraternity members. I was pretty intimated, but glad I was forced to step outside my shell and start performing because now it's second nature.

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?

The Beatles were my number one influence. I grew up listening to them, and pretty much knew how to play most of their songs on piano by the time I was 10. Aside from the Beatles, I'm from a town called Oyster Bay on LI, which is the same hometown as Billy Joel who is one of the greatest singer/songwriters in my opinion. It was only natural to learn all his music as well.

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?

I was once performing in West Virginia. I had booked a hotel online, and the address for the hotel was One Cliffview Drive or something like that. I plugged the address into my GPS after the show at night and followed the directions given. It's pretty crazy how dangerous this really was, but apparently in West Virginia there were two Cliffview drives. One is for the hotel, and one is for an actual cliff! My GPS took me to the edge of a cliff, and thankfully my tour manager and I were driving slow enough that we had time to stop!

Favorite Food: Mexican food!

Favorite Drink: Water, coffee, tea, or scotch!

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself?

That's a tough question. Jim Carrey is one of my favorite actors whether comedy or drama, so let's go with him!

What two words would best describe your music?

Hmm...Lets say "honest" and "cinematic" even though I can probably think of two better words after I submit my answer :)
