Artist Q&A

Q&A with Smoke n' Mangos

smoke n mangos

Where and when was your first show?   Our first show was at our high school’s talent show during our senior year. We actually only made the band with the talent show in mind; we didn’t think we would end up writing songs or playing shows or anything. We got third.

What band/artist would you consider to be your main influence?

I think we each have pretty different main influences: The Band, Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Trampled By Turtles, etc., and we each try to take influence from everything we hear. That ends up being nice though because individually we all come up with a good variety of ideas and just put it all together. We try hard to make sure that every song has at least a little something that makes it stand out from the one before it/after it.

What is one of your most memorable or off-the-wall touring experiences?

We were walking around NYC and playing on the streets during our first tour last May and decided to go into a cool looking music store called the Music Inn that had all of these unique instruments hanging from the ceiling. The owner inside saw our cases and asked us to play him a song, so we started playing our song “One Bottle Short,” and immediately everyone in the shop started playing along with electric guitar, harmonica, and random percussions. Because of all of the big/old/acoustic instruments hanging from the ceiling everything reverberated in a really warm and full way and it was probably the nicest any of our songs has ever sounded!  We also once had a strange experience with paper Mache in Boston.

Favorite Food:

Salmon, but we prefer eating it the same way Gollum does in Lord of the Rings.

Favorite Drink:

Josh’s is Milk.

If you were to have a film/movie based on your career, which actors or band would you select to portray yourself?

It would be one of those movies where Christopher Walken plays everyone.

Cat-Person, Dog-Person, or both?

Dogs! But Sid has over three thousand cats.

What two words would best describe your music?

A smile
