Sonia Coonen has been a bartender at Jammin Java for a few years. She's organizing a really unique event this Sunday called The Giving Gathering. It will have some local artists and craftspeople displaying their work. Some other Jammin Java staff will also be there with their handiwork. There will be a raffle to support a local charity too! It'll be a great way to check out some fabulous local craftspeople, support them, AND do some holiday shopping! Here's a brief interview with Sonia: Tell us a little about what we can expect at the event tomorrow. There will be an explosive variety of arts! From poetry, starting at 5 to ambient tunes. There will be diverse vendors from the community selling their crafted goods for the holidays, from chefs to photographers to jewelry-artists, and painters. Most importantly there will be a charity raffle and donations being made for the Dalits in India to put a stop to child labor and human trafficking through the Dalit Freedom Network based out of DC.
What gave you the idea to organize this event? I was eager to put this event together to support and bring together the local art community. Having lived here for 7 years, it has been hard to find an art community, so what better way to do so through this event!
Which charity will benefit from the raffle? How did you choose that charity? The Dalit Freedom Network is an organization based out of DC. I chose this charity because I feel as though we need to support local efforts to make an international difference. With the efforts of building a community in India, we can end human trafficking, forced labor, child labor, and slavery.
What are you most looking forward to about the event tomorrow? Making a difference through art! I can't wait for all my loved ones and like-minded individuals to come together to indulged and be inspired by our art community.
Will you be making anything for the event? Tell us about it. I will have a shared vending table with hand-made hula hoops, massive dream catchers, and jewelry. One of my dream-catchers will be put up for the charity raffle.
